phat 'n jazzy

A Decade of Soulful Sounds ten years of Phat-n-Jazzy

In 2004, Phat N' Jazzy celebrates a ten year run of phat beats of jazzy vibes every Tuesday Night. One of the longest running club-nights in America, Phat N' Jazzy has become an Orlando institution, and [ is still packing The Social every week.]

Founded by Greg Lentz (DJ BMF) and Gerard Mitchell (Slack) at neighboring club Barbarella in 1994, Phat N' Jazzy was designed as an alternative to Orlando's burgeoning rave scene and underage hip-hop parties. The music policy at the time was to provide a platform for Acid Jazz, "Trip Hop", and native tongue-style hip-hop. Before long the "alternative" became one of the hottest nights in the city, and as the night grew, DJs Q-Burn's Abstract Message (Michael Donaldson) and Pimp Daddy Nash (Jon Curtis) were added to the weekly roster. The four resident DJs would soon join together to form Eighth Dimension Records, an outlet for the original material the crew was starting to produce, and to show the world the real underground sound of Orlando.

After a couple of successful years at Barbarella, Phat N' Jazzy moved to Sapphire Supper Club, a venue that featured an impressive stage and an atmosphere  suited for the experimental nature of the night. Before long Phat N' Jazzy became a tour stop for bands and DJs that were players in the global underground. Groups such as Galactic, Madeski Martin & Wood, and The Propellerheads first played at Phat-n-Jazzy Tuesday night phenomena long before they were recognizable names. The list of international DJs that have taken the decks reads like a who's who of hip-hop and dance, including such luminaries as DJ Spinna, Mark Rae, Cut Chemist, Mr Scruff, Greyboy, Prince Paul, The Wiseguys, King Brit,  DJ Smash and Mark Farina.[see full list below]

While playing host to the world's DJ elite, the resident jocks of Phat N' Jazzy were gaining national notoriety of their own, due in part to their weekly residency and the success of Eighth Dimension Records. Q-Burn's Abstract Message would elevate the stature of both the club night and their label as his production career took him to the international stage, as he toured around the world with the likes of The Chemical Brothers, Meat Beat Manifesto, and Fat Boy Slim. BMF would release 3 acclaimed mixed cd's "Jumbo Pack 3" [Nu Breed Records], "Boneshakers" [Internal Bass Records UK], and "Sound in the Round" [Shadow Records]. Along with sought after original productions BMF & Swambuger "S.W.A.M." [Eighth Dimension], BMF & Swamburger "Steel Contraption" [Eighth Dimension], BMF "Deepest Soul" [Internal Bass UK], and BMF "Trippin" [Nu Breed].

After ten funky years, Phat N' Jazzy remains as strong as ever. DJs BMF and Gerard Mitchell remain residents behind the turntables, dedicated to bringing an eclectic mix of jazzy hip-hop, nouveau soul, and laid-back house to a musically appreciative crowd each and every Tuesday night. Phat N' Jazzy is a tour stop must for the most influential artists of the down-tempo genre, while remaining dedicated to exposing new talent and helping to launch the careers of the next generation of big-name acts. This mission is the mark of a truly legendary club night, and it is the mark of Phat N' Jazzy.Phat-n-Jazzy.
